Close the gap between strategy and everyday action

A strategy becomes actionable when priorities have owners, decisions, resources and review points. Connect the plan with the capabilities and behaviours people need to deliver it.
Reduce the distance between the plan and the job
A strategic statement may make sense to the leadership team while leaving employees unsure what changes tomorrow. Translate each priority into the decisions and actions required from the people doing the work.
Identify what should stop as well as what should start. A new priority added to an unchanged workload may remain an intention rather than a deliverable.
Name an owner and the first decision
Give each action a clear owner and agree what authority that person has. Identify the first decision needed, the people involved and the information required to make it.
Do not mistake shared interest for shared accountability. Collaboration can involve several teams while one person remains responsible for bringing the action to the next review.
Check capacity and capability
Ask whether the team has the time, skills and tools to do what the plan requires. Use specific evidence from the work where possible. A capability gap may call for development, a different allocation of work or a change to the plan.
Structured assessment can help clarify some skill and behaviour requirements, but it should be connected to the actual delivery problem rather than added as a separate exercise.
Review decisions and obstacles
A review meeting should expose what has changed, which decisions are needed and where work is blocked. Agree what evidence will demonstrate progress and keep the discussion close to that evidence.
Where an action is repeatedly delayed, examine the cause. An unclear dependency or conflicting priority will not be solved by repeating the deadline.
Connect leadership development with delivery
Use the plan to identify the leadership behaviours that matter: setting expectations, making decisions, communicating priorities or addressing problems early. Make development actions practical and review their use in the work.
